Course title:  Elementary Statistical Methods

Semester credit hours:  3 (Lecture hours: 48)

Course description:  Collection, analysis, presentation and interpretation of data, and probability. Analysis includes descriptive statistics, correlation and regression, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing. Use of appropriate technology is recommended.

Course prerequisites:  Meet TSI college-readiness standard for Elementary Statistics; or equivalent

Required course materials:

Registration in the course gives you the access code to the online learning platform and e-book needed for MATH 1342 (MyLab Statistics – e-text included in MyLab Statistics).  You do not need to purchase a separate access code.  Instructions for obtaining your access code will be posted in Canvas.

A calculator is required.   The TI-30X IIS is recommended.  The TI 83-84 calculator is allowed.

NOTE: Phone calculators will not be allowed on exams.

STUDENT HOURS (OFFICE HOURS)

Each week instructors have time set aside to meet with students outside of class. (Traditionally these times have been called “office hours”.) This is a time when a student may ask questions regarding the class, or discuss a particular problem/topic with an instructor one-on-one.  Student hours may be held in person or online.  See below for instructions on where/when/how instructors will offer student hours in this class.

Office hours can be held in my office or virtually through Cisco WebEx.   If you come to my office, you do not need to make an appointment ahead of time (although doing so is fine).  To schedule a virtual appointment, click on the Cisco WebEx link in the Canvas course, and choose a day and time.  The email with the meeting link will go to your NCTC student email account (Not Canvas). 

MATH TUTORING LAB

Students who need help with any math class can visit the NCTC Mathematics Lab to receive assistance.  There are math tutors available on every campus and online.  This service is free for all students enrolled in an NCTC math class. The online quizzes and graded homework assignments together comprise 30% of your overall grade.   The 4 exams will be 50%, and the final exam will be 20%.

Final grade scale:  90 – 100% = A;   80 – 89% = B; 70 – 79% = C;  60 – 69% = D;  Below 60% = F

 Online quizzes are done through MyLab Statistics.   They are due on Fridays by 11:59 pm.  You will have 5 attempts on each quiz.  The highest grade of those attempts is the one recorded. 

Two quiz grades (online and/or group) will be dropped at the end of the semester.  For this reason, late assignments may not be accepted.  Make sure you allow yourself plenty of time to get the online quizzes done.    If you absolutely cannot be in class for a group quiz, make sure you contact the instructor.

There will also be practice homework assignments and MyLab video assignments each week, but these will not count toward your overall grade.   These will be open past their due dates.  You can work on them at any time.  You will need to access them from the Canvas modules or through MyLab and Mastering, as the links will disappear from the “To-Do” lists in Canvas once they have been started.

Exams are not online and must be proctored.  More information is given in the course information module in Canvas.  There is a primary date for each where the instructor will give the exam on the Corinth campus at a given time (listed below).  Then there will be alternate dates where you may take the test at any NCTC testing center.

Exam #1:  Primary date:  Saturday, September 30 from 10am to 12pm

                 Alternate dates:  Tuesday – Friday, September 26 - 29

Exam #2:  Primary date:  Saturday, November 4 from 10am to 12pm

                 Alternate dates:  Tuesday – Friday, October 31 – November 3

Exam #3:  Primary date:  Saturday, December 2 from 10am to 12pm

                 Alternate dates:  Tuesday – Friday, November 28 – December 1

Final Exam:  Primary date:  Wednesday, December 13 from 6pm – 8pm

                     Alternate dates:  Monday – Wednesday, December 11 - 13

COURSE POLICIES

Academic Integrity Policy:

Scholastic dishonesty shall include, but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, academic falsification, intellectual property dishonesty, academic dishonesty facilitation, and collusion.  The use of online math solvers with submitted work is considered academic dishonesty.  Faculty members may document and bring charges against a student who is engaged in or is suspected to be engaged in academic dishonesty.  See Student Handbook, “Student Rights & Responsibilities: Student Code of Conduct ([FLB(LOCAL)]”.  

Consequences for academic dishonesty may include:

1. Zero on the assignment
2. Failing grade for the course

Attendance Policy:

Regular attendance is expected and necessary for student success in this course. For more information on attendance regulations please see the 2022-2023 NCTC Catalog.  (https://www.nctc.edu/catalog; Click on 2022-2023 CATALOG and go to page 138 to see Attendance Regulations).

Attendance will be based on how long you spend doing assignments in the course each week.  As long as you are doing the assignments, your attendance will be fine.  It does not count toward your grade. 

Withdrawal Policy

A student may withdraw from a course on or after the official date of record. It is the student’s responsibility to initiate and complete a Withdrawal Request Form.

Last day to withdraw from a 16-week course with a “W” is: Monday, November 6, 2023

Follett ACCESS is a partnership between the NCTC Bookstore and Pearson Education to provide the best learning resources on the first day of class. Students can gain access to Pearson’s adaptive online platform with the latest version of the eBook at a discount. If students would like to purchase a physical copy of the textbook, they can order it through the bookstore.

Students who drop before the add/drop date will have their book fees credited back to their student account, and students who remain in the course will be charged a materials fee by the school to have continued access of the online platforms.  If you remain enrolled in the course but wish to opt-out of access to the book please email the NCTC Bookstore within the first two weeks of class with your name and student number to 1263mgr@follett.com.
