Course title:  Elementary Statistical Methods

Semester credit hours:  3 (Lecture hours: 48)

 

Course description:  Collection, analysis, presentation and interpretation of data, and probability. Analysis includes descriptive statistics, correlation and regression, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing. Use of appropriate technology is recommended.

 

Course prerequisites:  Meet TSI college-readiness standard for Elementary Statistics; or equivalent.

 

Required course materials:  MyLab Statistics (e-text included in MyLab Statistics)

Course ID:

TI-30X IIS or TI 83-84 calculator is required.

NOTE: Phone calculators will not be allowed on exams.

STUDENT HOURS (OFFICE HOURS)

Each week instructors have time set aside to meet with students outside of class. (Traditionally these times have been called “office hours”.) This is a time when a student may ask questions regarding the class or discuss a particular problem/topic with an instructor one-on-one.  Student hours may be held in-person or online.  See below for instructions on where/when/how instructors will offer student hours in this class.

I will not answer emails after 7:30 PM. During weeks we have an exam I will make myself available until 10:00 PM.

 

MATH TUTORING LAB

 

Students who need help with any math class can visit the NCTC Mathematics Lab to receive assistance.  There are math tutors available on every campus and online.  This service is free for all students enrolled in an NCTC math class.               Comprehensive department final exam

Final Exam is in person on Wednesday, December 13th, 2023, from 6:30 PM to 8:20 PM. Face to face students will take their exam on paper while online synchronous will take their exam online with their cameras on.

             

Final grade scale:  90 – 100% = A;   80 – 89% = B; 70 – 79% = C;  60 – 69% = D;  Below 60% = F

 


 

In- Class Quizzes (20%)

Quizzes that are given in class to gauge students’ retention. These quizzes will be a surprise, think pop quiz!

 

Homework (20%)

Late homework is accepted with a 20% penalty to the final grade. Homework is online through My Stats Lab There is not a limit to the attempts on your homework assignments. The two lowest homework grades will be dropped.

 

Chapter 4 Project (Counted as test grade)

Chapter 4 project uses data determine if a relationship between to variables exists. Data is given or can be collected for an additional 5 points. For more details, please see instructions posted in the “Chapter 4 Project” module on canvas.

 

Tests (40%)

Late tests are not accepted. Tests are administered on paper the last 90 minutes of class. Face to face students will be given a paper exam with and are permitted to use a formula sheet and a notecard. Synchronous online students will be given the same exam via MyStatsLab and must have their camera on while taking their exam. Synchronous students must also submit their scratch work within 15 minutes of completing their exam. Failure to submit scratch work will result in a 25-point deduction. Synchronous students may also use their formula sheet and notecard.

 

 

Final Exam (20%)

The final is in person on Wednesday, December 13th, 2023, from 6:30 PM to 8:20 PM. Face to face students will take their exam on paper while online synchronous will take their exam online with their cameras on. The final exam will follow the same rules and guidelines as semester in class exams.

Academic Integrity Policy:

Scholastic dishonesty shall include, but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, academic falsification, intellectual property dishonesty, academic dishonesty facilitation, and collusion.  The use of online math solvers with submitted work is considered academic dishonesty.  Faculty members may document and bring charges against a student who is engaged in or is suspected to be engaged in academic dishonesty.  See Student Handbook, “Student Rights & Responsibilities: Student Code of Conduct ([FLB(LOCAL)]”.  

Consequences for academic dishonesty may include:

  1. Zero on the assignment
  2. Failing grade for the course

Withdrawal Policy

A student may withdraw from a course on or after the official date of record. It is the student’s responsibility to initiate and complete a Withdrawal Request Form.

 

Last day to withdraw from a 16-week course with a “W” is: November 6, 2023

  5. Examine, analyze, and compare various sampling distributions for both discrete and continuous random variables.
  6. Describe and compute confidence intervals.
