Course title:  Elementary Statistical Methods

Course description:  Collection, analysis, presentation, and interpretation of data, and probability. Analysis includes descriptive statistics, correlation and regression, confidence intervals, and hypothesis testing. The use of appropriate technology is recommended.

 

Course prerequisites:  Meet TSI college-readiness standard for Elementary Statistics; or equivalent

 

Required course materials:  MyLab Statistics Access (e-text included in MyLab Statistics)

TI-30X IIS or TI 83-84 calculator is required

NOTE: Phone calculators will not be allowed on exams.

Desktop or Tablet meeting technical requirements to access Canvas and complete assignments.

STUDENT HOURS (OFFICE HOURS)

Each week instructors have time set aside to meet with students outside of class. (Traditionally these times have been called “office hours”.) This is a time when a student may ask questions regarding the class, or discuss a particular problem/topic with an instructor one-on-one.  Student meetings may be held in-person, online, or by phone.  See below for instructions on where/when/how instructors will offer student hours in this class.

 

Students may schedule Webex or phone appointments or view available appointment times at https://calendly.com/nctcawilson/student-meeting.  The student hours available for an appointment during the first week of classes will be Thursday evening:   All students are invited to a class Webex meeting 6:00 –7:00 pm. Students may schedule one-on-one appointment times for Thursday 7:00 pm -8:00 pm. 

 

A survey of student availability is included in the course orientation to determine the student hour availability for the remainder of the semester.

 

MATH TUTORING LAB

 

Students who need help with any math class can visit the NCTC Mathematics Lab to receive assistance.  There are math tutors available on every campus and online.  This service is free for all students enrolled in an NCTC math class. Final grade scale:  90 – 100% = A;   80 – 89% = B; 70 – 79% = C;  60 – 69% = D;  Below 60% = F

Attending in-person testing and registering for MyLab Statistics are essential actions for course success.  Tests are direct assessments of student learning and progress, and MyLab contains the coursework, e-text, and supplementary resources necessary to complete the course.  

 

Students that have not registered for MyLab by 11:59 pm on Sunday January 22nd may be withdrawn from the course.  Students that lose access to MyLab Statistics after this date will be withdrawn from the course.   The instructor may also request that student be withdrawn from the course for non-attendance if two weeks of assignments are missed, or if tests are missed. 

 

Participation:  Participation assignments include discussions, class surveys, and activities that allow engagement with classmates and course material.  Discussion posts may have a due date for the initial post and a later discussion close date, to allow for dialogue on the topics. 

 

Homework: Due online via MyLab.  Due dates on the homework are suggested dates to assist with pacing yourself through the assignments.  The lowest 5 homework grades will be dropped at the end of the semester.

 

Quizzes:  Due online via MyLab by 11:59 pm on Sundays.  Students may make up to 3 attempts on each quiz. I will record the highest score.  The lowest quiz score will be dropped at the end of the semester.

 

Exams:  There will be 3 unit tests and 1 Final Exam.  The final exam is comprehensive and required.  Each of these 4 exams must be taken in-person on campus during the testing period. Each unit testing period will include an in-class exam on the Corinth campus with an instructor.    Students not testing during the in-class exam must schedule an appointment at an NCTC campus testing center (see the Testing Information document in Canvas for more information and exceptions).   

 

Students are allowed one 3 inch by 5 inch notecard at each unit test, and one 8.5 inch by 11 inch sheet for notes on the final exam.  No attachments are allowed on the notecard (nothing glued, stapled, etc)

 

There are no makeup exams or retakes for exams, however, the final exam may also be used to replace the lowest unit test grade or one missed exam.  

 

Late work policy:

Homework may be submitted with no penalty until May 8th.

 

A 20% penalty will be deducted for late initial posts, submitted during the posting period.  Once the discussion board has closed, no additional posting will be allowed.

 

A 20% penalty will be deducted for late quizzes.

 

No late exams will be accepted.   Missed exams will earn a zero score.

Academic Integrity Policy:

Scholastic dishonesty shall include, but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, academic falsification, intellectual property dishonesty, academic dishonesty facilitation, and collusion.  The use of online math solvers with submitted work is considered academic dishonesty.  Faculty members may document and bring charges against a student who is engaged in or is suspected to be engaged in academic dishonesty.  See Student Handbook, “Student Rights & Responsibilities: Student Code of Conduct ([FLB(LOCAL)]”.  

Consequences for academic dishonesty may include:

  1. Zero on the assignment
  2. Failing grade for the course

Withdrawal Policy

A student may withdraw from a course on or after the official date of record. It is the student’s responsibility to initiate and complete a Withdrawal Request Form.

 

Last day to withdraw from a 16-week course with a “W” is: Monday, April 3, 2023
