Course Description (NCTC Catalog): Collection, analysis, presentation and interpretation of data, and probability. Analysis includes descriptive statistics, correlation and regression, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing. Use of appropriate technology is recommended.

Course Prerequisite(s): Meet TSI college-readiness standard for Elementary Statistics; or equivalent

Required or Recommended Course Materials: Required: Registration in MyStatLab, a scientific calculator, and access to Excel
Optional: The textbook is Fundamentals of Statistics Informed Decisions using Data, 4th Edition, Michael Sullivan, III ISBN #9780321839039. However, the ebook is included in MyStatLab, so only buy the textbook if you want it.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

Explain the use of data collection and statistics as tools to reach reasonable conclusions.

Recognize, examine and interpret the basic principles of describing and presenting data.

Compute and interpret empirical and theoretical probabilities using the rules of
probabilities and combinatorics.

Explain the role of probability in statistics.

Examine, analyze and compare various sampling distributions for both discrete and
continuous random variables.

Describe and compute confidence intervals.

Solve linear regression and correlation problems.

ATTENDANCE POLICY
Students should log into Canvas at least 4 times per week.
If dropping the course becomes necessary, that is the student’s responsibility. This instructor will not drop you if you stop doing the online work or don’t take the exams.
TENTATIVE SCHEDULE
Assignments (homework and quizzes) will be due every Monday. The four Excel assignments will also be due on specific Mondays.
Exams are not online, and will be proctored. The primary dates for exams (listed below) will be on Saturdays from 10am – 12pm on the Corinth campus. Other options will be available to schedule exams. More information will be posted in Canvas.
Tentative Exam Dates:
Exam #1: Saturday, September 24
Exam #2: Saturday, October 22
Exam #3: Saturday, November 19
Final Exam: Saturday, December 3
Last day to withdraw from a course with a “W” is November 14, 2016
