Course description: Intended for Non-STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) majors. Topics include introductory treatments of sets and logic, financial mathematics, probability and statistics with appropriate applications. Number sense, proportional reasoning, estimation, technology, and communication should be embedded throughout the course. Additional topics may be covered.
Course prerequisites: Meet TSI college-readiness standard for Contemporary Mathematics; or equivalent.
Required course materials: Pearson MyLab Math Access (e-text included in MyLab Math subscription)
Required Technology: Computer with dependable internet resource, basic scientific calculator, TI-30X IIS basic scientific calculator is recommended, and a free pdf scanner app downloaded on your phone.
Graphing calculators and phone calculators will not be allowed on exams.

STUDENT HOURS (OFFICE HOURS)
Each week instructors have time set aside to meet with students outside of class. (Traditionally these times have been called “office hours”.) This is a time when a student may ask questions regarding the class, or discuss a particular problem/topic with an instructor one-on-one. Student hours may be held in-person or online. See below for instructions on where/when/how instructors will offer student hours in this class.
Students who wish to make an appointment to meet with the instructor will refer to the Canvas Home page icon named ‘WebEx Office Hours’. This module contains a link to the Calendly scheduler. Students will select a date and time as well as designate a location. Location choices are: ‘in-person’, for those students who reside near the Bowie campus or ‘WebEx’, for those students that do not reside near the Bowie campus or prefer this meeting modality. If WebEx is the selected location, the student will receive a confirmation email containing the required WebEx meeting link for the designated date and time (keep for your reference).
MATH TUTORING LAB
Students who need help with any math class can visit the NCTC Mathematics Lab to receive assistance. There are math tutors available on every campus and online. This service is free for all students enrolled in an NCTC math class. Sign up for an appointment or see the most current tutoring hours for all campuses at https://www.nctc.edu/math-lab.

Grading policy:
All graded homework, quizzes, practice tests, and Unit tests require a paid and registered student access to Pearson MyMathLab (MML) to earn grades in this course.
All homework and quizzes will be completed online using MyMathLab (MML) following the posted due dates in MyMathLab. Homework has unlimited attempts to maximize scores up to the due date. Quizzes have 3 attempts; the highest score is recorded in the Canvas grade book. Exams have a timed, single attempt. The timer cannot be stopped or paused for any reason.
Testing policy:
All tests will be completed online in MyMathLab in a ‘non-proctored’ environment unless issues with student honesty occur. All exams will require a submission of handwritten work supporting the mathematical processes used during the exam within 15 minutes of exam completion. Work submission must match and support the online testing portion. If a student does not submit handwritten work a zero will be recorded for the exam, regardless of results in the online testing portion. Refer to Exam Policies posted in the Canvas course. The submission of written work will require the use of a scanner or PDF scanning application on your phone. Submissions should be saved as PDF file extensions to be accepted in the Canvas upload assignment for grading. No photo files or emailed work will be accepted.
Students have 48-hours, following the return of testing feedback, to raise questions or concerns about grading. After the 48-hours have expired, students can no longer contest a test grade. The grade book in Canvas is the official record keeper of this course.
Late work policy:
Do not ask to extend due dates.
There will be no make-up assignments (including tests).

Academic Integrity Policy:
Scholastic dishonesty shall include, but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, academic falsification, intellectual property dishonesty, academic dishonesty facilitation, and collusion. The use of online math solvers with submitted work is considered academic dishonesty. Faculty members may document and bring charges against a student who is engaged in or is suspected to be engaged in academic dishonesty. Consequences for academic dishonesty may include:
- Zero on the assignment
- Failing grade for the course
Attendance Policy:

Withdrawal Policy
A student may withdraw from a course on or after the official date of record. It is the student’s responsibility to initiate and complete a Withdrawal Request Form.
Last day to withdraw from the course with a “W” is: Monday, October 31, 2022
