Course Description (NCTC Catalog): This course is the basic study of limits and continuity, differentiation, optimization and graphing, and integration of elementary functions, with emphasis on applications in business, economics, and social sciences. This course is not a substitute for MATH 2413, Calculus I.           

Course Prerequisite(s): MATH 1314 College Algebra or MATH 1324 Mathematics for Business and Social Sciences

Required  text book:  Introductory Mathematical Analysis for Business, Economics and the Life and Social Sciences, Ernest F. Haeussler, Jr., Richard S. Paul, and Richard J. Wood, 13th edition, Pearson Prentice Hall, Inc., 2011

Required:  Scientific calculator, TI-30X IIS is recommended

Graphing calculators and phone calculators will not be allowed on exams.

Apply calculus to solve business, economics, and social sciences problems.

Apply appropriate differentiation techniques to obtain derivatives of various functions, including logarithmic and exponential functions.

Solve application problems involving implicit differentiation and related rates.

Solve optimization problems with emphasis on business and social sciences applications.

Determine appropriate technique(s) of integration.

Integrate functions using the method of integration by parts or substitution, as appropriate.

We will have 5 exams during  the semester, and a comprehensive final exam.

 

Your grade will be the average of the 5 highest of the 6 exams.

i.e. your lowest exam grade will be dropped – that exam can be the final exam.

The 5 exam grades used to compute your exam average will all be weighted equally.

 

If you do not take the final exam, you will have no possibility of any curve of your grade.

 

The grading scale is as follows:

 A:  90-100       B: 80-89      C: 70-79      D: 60-69      F: 0-59

 

THERE WILL BE NO MAKE-UP EXAMS.

The grading policy may be amended during the semester at the instructor’s discretion.  Any announcements/information disseminated during class will take precedence over the syllabus and any postings in Canvas.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered.  All absences are considered to be unauthorized unless the student is absent due to illness or emergencies.  It is the student’s responsibility to provide documentation as to the emergency for approval by the faculty member.  Approved college-sponsored activities are also excused absences.  The instructor is responsible for judging the validity of any reason given for an absence.  Valid reasons for absence, however, do not relieve the student of the responsibility for making up required work.  Students will not be allowed to make up an examination missed due to absence unless the absence is documented and excused by the instructor.  Student will be dropped from a class by the Registrar upon recommendation of the instructor who feels the student has been justifiably absent or tardy a sufficient number of times to preclude meeting the course’s objectives.    Persistent, unjustified absences from classes or laboratories will be considered sufficient cause for College officials to drop a student from the rolls of the College. Last day to withdraw from a course with a “W” is Thursday, November 9, 2017.
