Catalog Description

Prerequisite:  MATH 1324 Mathematics for Business & Social Sciences or

MATH 1314 College Algebra

48 lecture hours………………………………………………3 credit hours

This course is the basic study of limits and continuity, differentiation, optimization and graphing, and integration of elementary functions, with emphasis on applications in business, economics, and social sciences. This course is not a substitute for MATH 2413, Calculus I.

 

Textbook & Materials Required/ Recommended

Introductory Mathematical Analysis for Business, Economics and the Life and Social Sciences, Ernest F. Haeussler, Jr., Richard S. Paul, and Richard J. Wood, 13th edition,

Pearson Prentice Hall, Inc., 2011

TI 30X or TI 83-84 calculator recommended.  The use of graphing calculators may be restricted on tests.

 

Learning Outcomes

1)      Apply calculus to solve business, economics, and social sciences problems.

2)      Apply appropriate differentiation techniques to obtain derivatives of various functions, including logarithmic and exponential functions.

3)      Solve application problems involving implicit differentiation and related rates.

4)      Solve optimization problems with emphasis on business and social sciences applications.

5)      Determine appropriate technique(s) of integration.

6)      Integrate functions using the method of integration by parts or substitution, as

appropriate.

7)      Solve business, economics, and social sciences applications problems using integration techniques.

Attendance Policy

Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered.  Students are responsible for keeping up with what occurs in class when they are absent.  Dropping a course is the student's responsibility, but you MAY be dropped for excessive absence.  See Attendance Regulations in the North Central Texas College Catalog.

Grade Calculation:

4 Homework assignments    20%(5% each assignment)

4 Exams                                60%(drop the lowest test grade)

1 Final exam                         20%      

Total                                    100% 

 

Grade Scale 

A=90 – 100; B=80 – 89; C=70 – 79; D=60-69; F=0 – 59

 

The grading policy may be amended at the instructor’s discrection.
