COURSE DESCRIPTION FOR MATH 1314 (NCTC CATALOG): In-depth study and applications of polynomial, rational, radical, exponential and logarithmic functions, and systems of equations using matrices. Additional topics such as sequences, series, probability, and conic may be included.
COURSE DESCRIPTION FOR NCBM 0214 (NCTC CATALOG): Concepts instructed in this course are algebraic including polynomials and rational expressions, linear expressions and inequalities, exponents and radicals, absolute value equations and inequalities, factoring, and quadratic equations and graphs. This course does not count toward graduation at NCTC.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR MATH 1314: At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate & apply knowledge of properties of functions, which include domain & range, operations, compositions, & inverses.
- Recognize & apply polynomial, rational, radical, exponential, & logarithmic functions & solve related equations
- Apply graphing techniques
- Evaluate all roots of higher degree polynomial & rational functions
- Recognize, solve & apply systems of linear equations using matrices

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR MATH 0214: At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
- Define, represent, & perform operations on real and complex numbers.
- Recognize, understand, & analyze features of a function.
- Recognize & use algebraic (field) properties, concepts, procedures (including factoring), & algorithms to combine, transform, & evaluate absolute value, polynomial, radical, & rational expressions
- Identify & solve absolute value, polynomial, radical, and rational equations.
- Identify & solve absolute value and linear inequalities.
- Model, interpret & justify mathematical ideas and concepts using multiple representations.
- Connect & use multiple strands of mathematics in situations and problems, as well as in the study of other disciplines.

COURSE PREREQUISITE(S): Pass Math 0305 with a “C” or better, or earn satisfactory TSI Assessment placement score, or earn satisfactory placement score on another approved assessment.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS AND QUIZZES
Homework will be assigned for all sections and will be completed in MyLab Math, an online homework and course management system. Other supplemental material is also there to help such as animations, applets, an etext, etc. You will need to register for this ASAP, and may use a free two-week trial to do so. If you have any questions about the registration process detailed below, please feel free to email me and let me know. Your free trial expiring will not excuse you from any assignment due dates. Please make sure to purchase full access to the homework before letting your free trial expire.
Each homework assignment will begin with a video lecture, which must be watched (or at least clicked on) as a part of the assignment. All assignments will be due the day of the test for which they belong. In other words, all assignments for sections covered on Test One are due at a specified time on the day of Test One. You have an unlimited number of attempts for each homework problem, but 5 attempts for each quiz. The homework will be available to you 24/7, and there are many places across campus that provide computers/internet in order to access the homework, therefore extensions will not be given for any reason, including technical difficulties. Please have an alternative plan should your computer fail, such as going to a public library.
STEPS TO REGISTER FOR MyLab Math
- On a laptop or desktop computer (Do Not use a phone or tablet) use the Google Chrome browser to get to Canvas. (Browsers other than Chrome often have difficulties with our homework system. Quite often, if you’re having an issue with the homework, simply switching to Chrome will fix the issue.)
- In Canvas, select the tab on the left that says Courses, and select our course MATH 1314.0522
- Select the tab in the menu on the left of our course that says Modules
- Scroll down to the Homework Information module and select the tab that says "Click Here To Get To Your Homework"...click the link in that tab.
- You should see an "End-User License Agreement and Privacy Policy", scroll down and select "I Agree" (This page may be missing if you've already agreed to the policy.)
- This should be a page with two options, "Sign in with a Pearson account" or "Create a Pearson account". If you do not already have an account, you should create a new account using your NCTC email address and your NCTC username. Also, do not use your full email address as your username, just the beginning of it (the same one you would use to login to a computer on campus)…your username should not have @nctc.edu in it.
- What you should see next are a few options to purchase access into the course. There is a place to type in an access code, and if you've bought one from the bookstore that's what you'll do. There is a place to purchase instant access using a credit card, with two different options for just access to the homework, or access to the homework and an electronic copy of the textbook. Lastly, towards the bottom, there is a link for a free 14 day trial. Choose which one you'd like, and that should be it.
If for some reason any of this doesn't work, please tell me which steps you were able to complete, which steps you got stuck on, and tell me the error message you received when you got stuck (you can even take a screen shot).
There will be 5 regular exams through this course, each will be taken on campus in person on pen and paper, and not online. No individual make-up exams will be given without an excused absence unless arranged with the instructor PRIOR to exam day. The final examination will be a comprehensive college algebra exam and is required of all students.

At North Central Texas College, students who test but do not meet the passing scores in ALL sections of the TSI Assessment or any other THECB approved testing measurements are required by state law to obtain TSI advising and continuously enroll in a formal college preparatory studies (developmental) program every semester until all TSI requirements are satisfied. TSI program attendance is MANDATORY. Non-compliance with the rules of attendance can result in a student being WITHDRAWN from the college preparatory and college-level math courses. Withdrawals are subject to college policies as set forth in the college catalog.
Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered. All absences are considered to be unauthorized unless the student is absent due to illness or emergencies. It is the student’s responsibility to provide documentation as to the emergency for approval by the faculty member. Approved college-sponsored activities are also excused absences. The instructor is responsible for judging the validity of any reason given for an absence. Valid reasons for absence, however, do not relieve the student of the responsibility for making up required work. Students will not be allowed to make up an examination missed due to absence unless the absence is documented and excused by the instructor. Student will be dropped from a class by the Registrar upon recommendation of the instructor who feels the student has been justifiably absent or tardy a sufficient number of times to preclude meeting the course’s objectives. Persistent, unjustified absences from classes or laboratories will be considered sufficient cause for College officials to drop a student from the rolls of the College. From Board Policy FC (LOCAL)
