Course Description for Math 1314 (NCTC Catalog):
In-depth study and applications of polynomial, rational, radical, exponential and logarithmic functions, and systems of equations using matrices. Additional topics such as sequences, series, probability, and conic may be included.

Course Prerequisite(s): Pass Math 0310 with a “C” or better, or earn satisfactory TSI Assessment placement score, or earn satisfactory placement score on another approved assessment.

At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

Demonstrate and apply knowledge of properties of functions, which include domain and range, operations, compositions, and inverses.

Evaluate all roots of higher degree polynomial and rational functions.

There are 3 regular written exams given in class during the semester. No individual make-up exams will be given. You must make prior arrangements with the instructor before you miss a test. Dates are listed in the course calendar. No notes, graphing calculators or phones allowed.
The final examination will be a comprehensive college algebra exam and is required of all students. It must be given at the time and date specified in the Final Exam Schedule.
Though not counted as a grade, it is expected that all students complete the interactive exercises and Book exercises in the thinkwell content for each chapter section. Completing the Practice Quiz is strongly encouraged before completing the quiz over that chapter section found in the assignments for the course. Quizzes are graded and should be competed online by the date specified in the calendar. You have unlimited number of attempts on each quiz. Work should be written and organized for all online problems.
The grading policy may be amended during the semester at the instructor’s discretion.
ATTENDANCE POLICY
It is expected that you log into this course on canvas at least three times a week. If you have to miss class, complete the video lesson for the sections covered in the class you missed before attempting the online exercises.
Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes forwhich they have registered. All absences are considered to be unauthorized unless the student is absent due to illness or emergencies. It is the student’sresponsibility to provide documentation as to the emergency for approval by the faculty member. Approved college-sponsored activities are also excused absences. The instructor is responsible for judging the validity of any reason given for an absence.Valid reasons for absence, however, do not relieve the student of the responsibility for making up required work. Students will not be allowed to make up an examination missed due to absence unless the absence is documented and excused by the instructor. Student will be dropped from a class by the Registrar upon recommendation of the instructor who feels the studenthas been justifiably absent or tardy a sufficient number of times to preclude meeting the course’s objectives. Persistent, unjustified absences from classes or laboratories will be considered sufficient cause for College officials to drop a student from the rolls of the College.

LAST DAY TO WITHDRAW
Last day to withdraw from a course with a “W” is Thursday, November 9, 2017. Dropping a course is the student’s responsibility.
