Course Requirements:

  • Graphing calculators and cell phone calculators are not allowed on exams. Please try not to use these on your homework/quizzes. Scientific calculators only may be used on exams.
  • All homework and quizzes are completed in MyMathLab (MML). The due dates are listed in MML as well as the weekly schedule. You can expect the homework and quizzes to be due every Monday night by midnight.
  • There are no makeup tests. If you know you are going to miss a test in advance, you can make an appointment with me to take the test early.
  • The final exam is comprehensive and must be taken by all students. The final exam may also be used to replace the lowest test grade (only if you missed 1 week of course material).
  • Email is the quickest way to contact me since I am between two campuses. I do try to respond within the same day, except Friday evening to Saturday evening. Please read the TSI Compliance and Attendance Policy in this syllabus.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

1.

Define, represent, and perform operations on real numbers.

2.

Recognize, understand, and analyze features of a function.

3.

Recognize and use algebraic (field) properties, concepts, procedures (including factoring), and algorithms to combine, transform, and evaluate polynomial expressions.

4.

Identify and solve polynomial equations.

5.

Identify and solve linear inequalities.

6.

Model, interpret and justify mathematical ideas and concepts using multiple representations.

7.

Connect and use multiple strands of mathematics in situations and problems, as well as in the study of other disciplines.

TSI COMPLIANCE

At University of North Texas, students who test but do not meet the passing scores in any section(s) of the TSI Assessment are required by state law to obtain TSI advising and continuously enroll in a formal college preparatory studies (developmental) program every semester until all TSI requirements are satisfied. TSI program attendance is MANDATORY.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all NCTM0341 classes for which they have registered. Students may receive attendance warnings from their instructor at the UNT student email address when the student accrues 1 week absence (not necessarily consecutive days) in a course. Failure to read and/or receive school email is no excuse for not complying with the Attendance Policy. It is the student's responsibility to maintain correct and current email and local and permanent addresses with the university.

After a student has been absent from class in excess of 2 weeks (not necessarily consecutive days), the student may be dropped from the NCTM course. Inform the instructor in writing during the first week of class of any religious holidays observed this semester. Documentation must be given to the instructor at the class following the holiday.

Also, since punctuality has become a problem in recent semesters, three tardies will be considered one absence. Coming in late disrupts the class. Occasions do occur that you will need to be tardy, but not on a consistent basis. Please refer to the UNT policy for specific questions regarding absences and excused absences: http://policy.unt.edu/sites/default/files/06.039_StudentAttendance_2016.pdf.

MATH LAB

If you need additional help, please contact the Learning Center for information on types of tutoring available (including online tutoring), how to schedule an appointment, and location at www.learningcenter.unt.edu.

The Math Lab serves students enrolled in UNT Math classes at the 0300-2000 level. If you are enrolled in one of these classes, you are eligible to utilize Math Lab services. The Math Lab is located in the General Academics Building (GAB), Room 440. The Math Lab is closed Sundays, all official UNT holidays, and during Final Exams. The Math Lab hours vary by semester. Go to http://math.unt.edu/mathlab for more information.

LAST DAY TO WITHDRAW

Last day to withdraw from a course with a “W” is Friday, April 20, 2018.

STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES

ADA statement

The University of North Texas makes reasonable academic accommodation for students with disabilities. Students seeking accommodation must first register with the Office of Disability Accommodation (ODA) to verify their eligibility. If a disability is verified, the ODA will provide you with an accommodation letter to be delivered to faculty to begin a private discussion regarding your specific needs in a course. You may request accommodations at any time, however, ODA notices of accommodation should be provided as early as possible in the semester to avoid any delay in implementation. Note that students must obtain a new letter of accommodation for every semester and must meet with each faculty member prior to implementation in each class. For additional information see the Office of Disability Accommodation website at www.unt.edu/oda . You may also contact them by phone at 940.565.4323. Located in Sage Hall 167.

Acceptable Student Behavior

Student behavior that interferes with an instructor’s ability to conduct a class or other students' opportunity to learn is unacceptable and disruptive and will not be tolerated in any instructional forum at UNT. Students engaging in unacceptable behavior will be directed to leave the classroom and the instructor may refer the student to the Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities to consider whether the student's conduct violated the Code of Student Conduct. The university's expectations for student conduct apply to all instructional forums, including university and electronic classroom, labs, discussion groups, field trips, etc. The Code of Student Conduct can be found at www.unt.edu/csrr

Cheating and Plagiarism

Students caught cheating or plagiarizing will receive a "0" for that particular assignment or exam. Additionally, the incident will be reported to the Office of Academic Integrity which may impose further penalties. According to the UNT catalog, the term "cheating" includes, but is not limited to: a. use of any unauthorized assistance in taking quizzes, tests, or examinations; b. dependence upon the aid of sources beyond those authorized by the instructor in writing papers, preparing reports, solving problems, or carrying out other assignments; c. the acquisition, without permission, of tests or other academic material belonging to a faculty or staff member of the university; d. dual submission of a paper or project, or resubmission of a paper or project to a different class without express permission from the instructor(s); or e. any other act designed to give a student an unfair advantage. The term "plagiarism" includes, but is not limited to: a. the knowing or negligent use by paraphrase or direct quotation of the published or unpublished work of another person without full and clear acknowledgment; and b. the knowing or negligent unacknowledged use of materials prepared by another person or agency engaged in the selling of term papers or other academic materials.
