Course description: Identify elements of firewall design, types of security threats and responses to security attacks. Use Best Practices to design, implement, and monitor a network security plan. Examine security incident postmortem reporting and ongoing network security activities. 32 lecture hours + 32 laboratory hours.

SUMMARY OF COURSE ASSIGNMENTS
List of graded assignments: Reading assignments, demonstrations, videos, cloud-based labs, quizzes and a final exam
Final grade scale: 100
Late work policy: Each week an assignment is late will result in 10 points being taken off the submitted work. If an assignment is 5 weeks late, no credit will be given for that assignment.

Academic Integrity Policy:
Attendance Policy: Attendance is based on participation in the class, so you are expected to actively participate in the assignments and the graded discussion forums on a weekly basis. I also expect you to check your email every day on M-F for any additional content. Exams are not allowed to be turned in late (exam integrity). Discussion questions are only allowed opened during the week in which they are due.
Withdrawal Policy
A student may withdraw from a course on or after the official date of record. It is the student’s responsibility to initiate and complete a Withdrawal Request Form.
Last day to withdraw from the course with a “W” is: February 17, 2023
Student Learning Outcomes: At the conclusion of the course a student will be able to:
- Demonstrate system security skills through firewall implementation and testing
- Use system tools, practices, and relevant technologies to implement a security plan
- Evaluate practices, tools, and technologies to identify security breaches, sources of attacks, and protect mission critical systems
- Establish an appropriate level of security based on an analysis of security logs
- Use relevant tools to secure a network, respond to and follow up on various types of attacks.
Core Objectives:
- Explain the fundamental concepts of network security.
- Recognize the impact that malicious exploits and attacks have on network security.
- Describe common network topologies and infrastructures, and incorporate them into a secure network design.
- Describe the fundamental functions performed by firewalls, common firewall technologies, and the elements of firewall implementation and configuration.
- Follow the implementation of a firewall.
- Describe the fundamental functions of virtual private networks (VPNs), common VPN technologies, and the elements of VPN implementation and management.
- Follow the implementation of a VPN.
- Identify firewall and network security management best practices.
- Evaluate regulations and emerging network security technologies.
