Internship Information & Application

Download the Internship Information and Application in Canvas, or get it from Ashley.  It needs to be submitted the FIRST DAY of class.  Please fill out the application in its entirety, and make sure to obtain ALL SIGNATURES requested. Either scan in the document, and submit it via Canvas, or submit the original copies and signatures to Ashley.  Please note that typed signatures DO NOT COUNT.

Resume & Career Services Report and Meeting

Create a resume cover letter addressing the horticulture job that you are targeting upon graduation, and create a resume to go along with it, emphasizing your horticulture education, experience, and skills.

Make an appointment with a career advisor at the NCTC Career Service Center (http://www.nctc.edu/career-services/index.html).  Ask the counselor to help you revise your horticulture resume, and find out about the career services they offer.  Write a one-page report on ways you plan to utilize the career center.  Refine your resume and cover letter, and submit it on Canvas.

Once you submit it, I will make written comments about it, without giving you a grade.  I want you to refine it using my feedback, and then resubmit it.  You might have to do this several times until it is an outstanding resume.  The goal here is to have an INCREDIBLE resume that you can use to seek employment upon graduation. Once it is a quality resume, I will give you a grade for it.  If the resume is not appropriately refined by the end of the semester, a zero will awarded for the assignment.

Time Sheets and Reports

For every 10 hours you work, fill out the Time Sheet and the Report that are hyperlinked in Canvas. Submit the completed information in the appropriate areas in Canvas. The time sheet and report should be submitted within 2 days of completing the 10 hour’s worth of work.  This is to encourage students to submit the time-sheets/reports in a timely fashion.  Students not submitting these within 48 hours of completing the work will be given a zero for the work.

Meeting at Job Placement

After you have completed half of your internship hours (80 hours), please set up a time for me to visit you at your job placement.  This is an opportunity for you to show me around and tell me about what you have been doing at your job.  It is up to you to meet with me and schedule this time.

Employer’s Evaluation

Please print the Employer Evaluation Document, and bring it to your employer.  Ask them to complete it and mail it to Ashley.

Final Report

To culminate your internship, submit a final report on your experience following the guidelines given in Canvas.  Submit this report during the last week of the internship.

Self-Evaluation

The final day of your internship, fill out and submit the self-evaluation, following the guidelines given in Canvas.

Instructor’s Evaluation

Your instructor will also evaluate your overall performance in your internship.

LAST DATE TO WITHDRAW

November 9, 2017

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Regular and punctual attendance is expected of all students in all classes for which they have registered.  All absences are considered to be unauthorized unless the student is absent due to illness or emergencies as determined by the instructor.  It is the student responsibility to provide documentation as to the emergency for approval and judgement by the faculty member.  Approved college sponsored activities are the only absences for which a student should not be held liable and only when provided by a college official ahead of the absence.  Valid reasons for absence, however, do not relieve the student of the responsibility for making up required work.  Students will not be allowed to make up an examination missed due to absence unless they have reasons acceptable to the instructor.  A student who is compelled to be absent when a test is given should petition the instructor, in advance if possible, for permission to postpone the exam.  Student will be dropped from a class by the Registrar upon recommendation of the instructor who feels the student has been justifiably absent or tardy a sufficient number of times to preclude meeting the course’s objectives.    Persistent, unjustified absences from classes or laboratories will be considered sufficient cause for College officials to drop a student from the rolls of the College. DISABILITY SERVICES (Office for Students with Disabilities)

The Counselors also provides resource information, disability-related information, and adaptive technology for students who qualify.

If you feel you have needs for services that the institution provides, please reach out to either Wayne Smith (940) 498-6207 or Yvonne Sandman (940) 668-4321.  Alternative students may stop by Room 170 in Corinth or Room 110 in Gainesville.

OTHER POLICIES AND PERTINENT INFORMATION

Announcements as Emails/Texts!

When the instructor needs to communicate with the entire class at once, an announcement will be posted in Canvas.  Students can choose to receive instructor announcements via texts and/or emails.  To activate this setting, go to your Canvas account, go to “settings”, and under “ways to contact,” enter in how you would like to receive communications (text and/or email).  This is highly recommended.  Not reading announcements is no excuse for being unprepared.

Dress Code

Students taking the cooperative education class are not only representing the NCTC Horticulture Program but are also being perceived/judged on an individual basis by their employers as well as the public. Certain jobs may require a uniform.  If a uniform is not specified, be prepared to dress professionally.  An example of professional gardening attire is: kaki work trousers/nice jeans/long kaki shorts or capris, a tucked-in button-down shirt or a short-sleeved polo-style shirt, a belt, and sturdy work boots.  Examples of inappropriate work attire:  jeans with holes, t-shirts with inappropriate logos, clothes that are immodest or ill-fitting, etc.  You are not required to purchase a book for this class – please purchase professional work clothes instead.
