Course Description (NCTC Catalog):

Intensive study of and practice in the strategies and techniques for developing research-based expository and persuasive texts. Emphasis on effective and ethical rhetorical inquiry, including primary and secondary research methods; critical reading of verbal, visual, and multimedia texts; systematic evaluation, synthesis, and documentation of information sources; and critical thinking about evidence and conclusions.

Scholastic Integrity

Scholastic dishonesty shall include, but not be limited to cheating on a test, plagiarism, and collusion. See Student Handbook “Student Rights & Responsibilities: Student Conduct [FLB- (LOCAL)]” #18.

Disciplinary Actions [Student Handbook, #5] “When cheating, collusion, or plagiarism has occurred beyond any reasonable doubt, the instructor may give the student or students involved an “F” on a particular assignment or in the course. [See Scholastic Dishonesty FLB (Local)] The instructor shall make a written report of the incident and of the planned action to his Department Chair.  The Department Chair shall report the incident and action to appropriate instructional dean who shall review the case, notify the student and, if necessary, take further action.  This may involve either probation or suspension of the student or students in question. If such disciplinary action is deemed necessary, the Dean of Student Services shall be notified, and the action shall be taken through that office.”

Plagiarism, which should be avoided at all costs, includes the following student actions:

1. Turning in someone else's ideas, opinions, theories, or work as your own;
2. Unintentionally or inadvertently turning in someone else's ideas, opinions, theories, or work as your own as the result of failing to document sources both internally and in the Works Cited;
3. Copying words, ideas, or images from someone without giving credit; Failing to put a quotation in quotations marks;
4. Giving incorrect information about the source of information, quotations, or images;
5. Changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit;
6. Copying so many words, ideas, or images from a source that it makes up the majority of the student's work, whether or not the student gives credit.

Students who plagiarize or cheat in the course will receive a zero for the first offense.  If a student foolishly chooses to do so again, they will receive an F for the course.  Please be aware that every plagiarism case will be turned into the Dean of Students.  In effort to prevent plagiarism, students will turn in a copy of their papers through a Turnitin drop box setup in Canvas.  If a student does not turn in an electronic copy of their paper, they will lose ten points off the paper grade.  I have the final say on what is and is not plagiarism.

Attendance Policy

Students may miss four (4) days of class.  After that, students will receive an F for the course.  As students are adults and made the decision to enroll in this class, they have the responsibility to drop from the class if they are no longer in attendance.  Students will also need to come to class in a timely fashion.  Students who arrive later than ten minutes to class will be counted absent.  Two tardies equal an absence.  

Civility Clause

Students are expected to behave like adults in the classroom.  Rude and disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated.  Private conversations, texting, sleeping in class, tardiness, and the like will be considered uncivil behavior.  Students who cannot behave in an adult manner will be punished in all manner of ways, from loss of participation grade points to removal from the course.  

Papers

All papers will be turned in at the beginning of class on the day they are due.  NO LATE PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED.  All papers are required to be turned into Canvas and in appropriate MLA format.  

• Papers that are not in appropriate MLA format will lose a letter grade.  
• Papers that do not meet the length requirement will lose a letter grade.  
• Plagiarized papers will receive the punishment outlined in the Plagiarism and Cheating Policy.  

Columnist Synopsis

Synopsis will be turned in on the day assigned.  Synopsis are to help develop students’ papers and to teach students the writing process.  Synopsis are graded on if they have followed the expectations and are the assigned length.  

Conferences

Students will meet with the instructor with a complete, digital/printed copy of their paper prior to the due date.  This will be student’s opportunity to ask the instructor questions about the assignment and their work and have the instructor review portions of their paper.  

• If students do not have a digital/printed copy of their paper, he/she will receive a zero for the grade.

• Students will receive a grade for attending their conference.  If students do not attend his/her conference they will receive a zero for their conference and absences for that class.

Grammar Activities

This activity is to assist the students on reviewing grammatical techniques that they will need throughout their collegiate career.   They are to be completed in the classroom.  They will be turned in on the day they are due.
