This course provides a historical and philosophical overview of the American criminal justice system, including the nature, extent, and impact of crime, criminal law; and the justice agencies and processes.

Course Prerequisite(s): None

Required Course Materials:

Criminal Justice in America 9th Edition Author George F. Cole and Christopher E. Smith with MindTap (required). Warning: If you choose to use a different edition, you do so at your own risk. Using a different edition may affect your performance in this class. You must get the code.

PROGRAM PURPOSE STATEMENT 

 

 

NCTC seeks to implement its goal of providing quality freshman and sophomore level courses in arts and sciences that parallel the lower division offerings of four-year colleges and universities by offering a coherent sequence of courses with appropriate breadth and depth to prepare student for transfer to a university. 

DEPARTMENTAL PURPOSE STATEMENT

 

 The Law Enforcement department prepares students for careers in every aspect of criminal justice, (police, courts and corrections), and for advanced degrees.

 

STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES

 

 

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

  1. Describe the history and philosophy of the American criminal justice system.
  2. Explain the nature and extent of crime in America.
  3. Analyze the impact and consequences of crime.
  4. Evaluate the development, concepts, and functions of law in the criminal justice system.
  5. Describe the structure of contemporary federal, state, and local justice agencies and processes.

 

ATTENDANCE  POLICY

Your attendance is taking by the completion of assignments.

 

TENTATIVE  SCHEDULE

 

If you choose not to print the entire syllabus, it is vital that you at least print the class calendar. The calendar will be your guide throughout this course. It displays when each module will open and due dates for all assignments. You will have one week to complete each module.

Do not use the to-do-list!!! You must go directly to the modules to see all assignments.

The module will be made available each Monday at 8:00 a.m. and will be disabled the following Sunday at 11:00 p.m., which means all assignments will need to be completed by 11:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Discussion Forums have different due dates. Due to the forums having three different due dates, you will not see a date beside the assignment in the module. Please see discussion forum instructions for instructions about when the initial post and response posts are due.

 

The due date for the Final Exam is different. You will only have three (3) days to complete the final exam.  The final will be available May 11, 2020 at 8:00 am and will shut off at 12:00 noon on May 13, 2020.

You will need the book and the MindTap code to complete some of the assignments.

The final exam will be available from 8:00 a.m. on December 11th and will shut off at 12:00 p.m. NOON on the December 13th.

 

Note:  Please be mindful that this is a tentative calendar and changes can be made at instructor’s discretion. The instructor will notify students of any changes. If you feel you cannot complete this course, the last day to withdraw with a “W” is April 3, 2020.
